Vicar General Appointed

July 8, 2009

Monsignor Don Bolen is the new Regina Archdiocesan Vicar General affective August 1.

He replaces Monsignor Ken Miller who officially retires July 31 after 13 years in the post.

The appointment was announced by Regina Archbishop Daniel Bohan.

“I’m grateful for the trust the Archbishop has in me and a little nervous at the same time. Monsignor Ken Miller did a tremendous job and had tremendous administrative skills and it’s pretty hard to think of being able to fill his shoes,” he said. The Vicar General has administrative duties within the Archdiocese and is next to the Archbishop in the hierarchy and fills in for him when the Archbishop is away or unable to fulfill his duties through illness. Monsignor Ken Miller was required to act in that capacity at one point during the late Archbishop Peter Mallon’s battle with cancer.

Monsignor Bolen returned last year after 7 years in Rome serving in various capacities at the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity.

He received the Honourary title of Monsignor February 7, 2008 in Rome in recognition for his work and the Archbishop of Canterbury Dr. Rowan Williams on February 3, 2009 presented him with the Cross of St. Augustine in recognition of his service to Anglican-Roman Catholic relations.

He occupied the Nash Chair for Religious Studies at Campion College, University of Regina and was recently appointed pastor for St. Joseph’s Parish in Balgonie, and St. Agnes in Pilot Butte, 2 communities just East of Regina.

Monsignor Bolen was born in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan where he received his early education. He graduated from Campion College with a BA in Religious Studies and English interrupted with a year of travelling. Almost immediately upon graduation he served in various Church capacities including a year at the newly opened Canmore, Alberta Bible College.

He entered St. Paul’s Seminary in Ottawa, Ontario in 1986 and was ordained priest at Regina’s Holy Rosary Cathedral in 1991 by Archbishop Charles Halpin.

After two years in parish ministry he completed a Masters and Licentiate at St. Paul’s University, Ottawa followed by another short period of parish work then on to Oxford for PhD studies in Theology.

He returned to teach at Campion and was priest moderator for Regina’s Francophone parish of St. Jean Baptiste and from there was called to Rome.
