July 7, 2009 Regina Archdiocese Vicar General Monsignor Ken Miller said he will miss the people that he met over 45 years of priesthood but not the interminable meetings he was required to attend both as Vicar General and parish priest. “There are wonderful people I met in all the parishes I served and I will miss being involved with the staff at the Diocesan Office, people who are very dedicated to and have a real love for the Church.” Monsignor Miller was born in Weyburn, Saskatchewan and with his family moved to Regina where he grew up. He was ordained by Archbishop Michael O’Neil, the first of 4 Archbishops under which he served, May 30, 1964. “Each of these Archbishops were gifted in different ways and brought a great deal of richness to the Church.” He served in various parishes throughout the Archdiocese but also served in several archdiocesan capacities starting in 1986 when Archbishop Charles Halpin appointed him as Director of Organization and Development. “The big work there was the reorganization of the pastoral office, naming the departments and having full responsibility for the Diocesan Centre.” He also developed during that period guidelines for pastoral councils and parish finance committees. 10 years later Archbishop Peter Mallon appointed him Vicar General an appointment that continued under present Archbishop Daniel Bohan. Although Monsignor Miller’s retirement is officially the end of July he’s agreed to remain in office until a new Vicar General is appointed probably in August. His tenure as Vicar General saw him involved in several major Archdiocesan developments including chairing the committee that developed and oversaw the implementation of the new diocesan borders when the Diocese of Gravelbourg was absorbed mostly into the Archdiocese of Regina and the Abbacy of Muenster was mostly absorbed by the Diocese of Saskatoon. Several northern Regina Archdiocese parishes were absorbed into Saskatoon as were a few western parishes of Gravelbourg and the changes necessitated border changes for all dioceses. He said the introduction of the Stewardship program for the Regina Archdiocese was one of the highlights of his vocation. “The vision of Stewardship as the disciples response affecting the totality of a person’s life that they have to be good stewards, to my mind it’s going to change the minds and hearts of people in the Archdiocese.” Monsignor Miller said he was grateful to God for the 45 years of service in the priesthood and serving in the Archdiocese of Regina. The first part of his retirement, he said, would be to get mentally and physically refreshed and then serve in pastoral ministries. He will retire to the family home, the same home in which he grew up in Regina. Frank Flegel |
