Sisters Celebrate 50 Years Of Religious Profession

May 17, 2009

Fifty years ago three young women journeyed to Moose Jaw from their respective home towns and decided to dedicate their lives to Christ by joining the Sisters of Charity of St. Louis. Over the years the three went their separate ways in service to Christ and the people and on May 17 they came together for a come and go tea to celebrate their golden anniversary.

Sisters Audrey Daoust originally from Torquay Saskatchewan, Sister Vicky Hagel originally from Medicine Hat and Sister Anne Murtagh who claims to have moved around so much she has no home town but was born in Bruno, Saskatchewan all joined the “Louies” as Sister Anne referred to her community because it was a teaching order. The three did not join on the same day but chose the Victoria Day weekend as the most convenient to celebrate the anniversary

Sister Anne is now retired and living in Lethbridge, Alberta, Sister Vicky teaches catechetics in Wilcox, Saskatchewan where she lives and Sister Audrey lives in Regina where she serves as one of the chaplains at Pasqua Hospital. They were excited to see so many and enthusiastically greeted all who entered.

All three said they enjoyed their vocation and the opportunities it gave them to meet so many people. “The highlight for me,” said Sister Audrey, “is the wonderful people who come into my life at the hospital or in my ministry.” Besides teaching she was also involved in home making and chaplaincy and said she loved every minute of it. Time has passed so quickly she said. “Time flies when you’re having fun.”

Sister Anne taught for most of working life that took her all over Canada. She said she joined the Order to teach in Saskatchewan but six months later she was transferred to Alberta and never came back. She taught in Alberta, British Columbia and Prince Edward Island. “I’ve had so many good years and highlights that it’s difficult to pick just one.”

Sister Vicky taught for 10 years then moved into parish work and served in several locations in Saskatchewan and Alberta before coming back to Saskatchewan. She too said the time passed quickly. “You’re busy doing your work and trying to serve the Lord and all of a sudden 50 years is here.” She also said there were too many highlights to pick one but said overall it was the greatness of working with people. “You make so many wonderful friends in your life. It’s such friendships you make that is the greatest highlight.”

The amenities room at Marian Gardens was packed for the entire three hour event as well wishers came and offered their congratulations to the Sisters, partook of the sweets that were offered and left to make room for the steady stream of visitors.
