Reverend Michael Hogan Appointed Monsignor

November 16, 2009

Reverend Michael Hogan was born in Ireland, came to Canada, ordained a priest, spent his entire 66 year vocation in the Regina Archdiocese, served as Vicar General and Archdiocesan Administrator and December 8 will officially be elevated to Protonotary Apostolic Monsignor.

Hogan said he initially told the Archbishop he wasn’t so sure it was good news because he was quite happy with his new life of not having to arrange or take part in celebrations. “It is quite a nice life, you see, and all of a sudden I’m front and centre and it’s not to my liking at this stage of my life,” he said with a chuckle. “It’s an honourary title and of course I’m very happy. There’s no question about it.” He will be invested along with several other priests who will receive Papal medals December 8 at Holy Rosary Cathedral.

Frequent trips to his birth land retained an Irish lilt in his conversation. He was born October 19, 1919, Limerick, Ireland and came to Canada and Regina in 1939 at the invitation of Archbishop P.J. Monahan after completing philosophy studies at Mungret College. He entered Regina Cleri Seminary and in 1943 was ordained in Holy Rosary Cathedral. Except for an early assignment in Estevan he spent his entire vocation serving various parishes in Regina.

He was for 17 years Vicar General until he retired from active parish work, July 31, 1993, but less than a year later he agreed to serve as Archdiocesan Administrator following the death of Archbishop Charles Halpin until Archbishop Peter Mallon was installed in July 1995. He remained active in his retirement serving as Chaplain at Pioneer Village, a seniors care home operated by the City of Regina and said a weekly mass at Pasqua Hospital, until he gave up active ministry at the age of 90 in August this year.

He still misses the weekends because they gave him focus. “The marvellous thing was, of course, at Pioneer and Pasqua, I met all those people I had baptized, or confirmed or officiated at their weddings and they kept reminding me. And the other thing about that was there was no administration. I just went over there and said mass. One of the Anglican ministers said to me ‘for the first time in your life you’re doing things what a priest is supposed to be doing saying mass and doing the sacraments’,”. He said he still enjoyed the ministry but it was time to go. “My reason for stepping down was that any day now, I may have to. And it was better to step down when somebody else can take over.” Recently retired Reverend Norm Marcotte took over.

Hogan every morning on a treadmill and reads avidly, mostly books with some history attached.
