Qu’Appelle Deanery Centennial Celebration

October 4, 2009

Historic Sacred Heart Church in Lebret hosted the Qu’Appelle Deanery’s celebration of the Archdiocesan Centennial celebration. Each of the 9 archdiocesan deaneries hosts a specific celebration of the centennial over the course of a year ending with a big mass celebration June 6, 2010, at Regina’s Brandt Centre. Lebret’s celebration was the sixth of the 9 deaneries.

“It was a good day,” said Qu’Appelle Deanery Chair Stan Vindevoghel. “It was cool and windy outside so everything was held inside the church.” A scheduled Stations of the Cross was cancelled because of the weather.

Part of the celebration included tours of both the church and local museum. A Living Rosary was held in the church strung along both sides of the main isle. Each person holding a bead recited part of the rosary. That was followed by a mass with Monsignor Don Bolen as main celebrant. He filled in for Archbishop Daniel Bohan who was at an Archdiocesan priests seminar. He followed the Archbishop’s practice in his homily of giving a short history of the area, paying tribute to the pioneers who endured many hardships and sowing the first seeds of faith.

The mass was followed by a beef in a bun supper along with salads and desserts contributed by parishioners. Entertainment was provided by several deanery communities including Grenfell, Wolseley, Indian Head, Fort Qu’Appelle and Lebret. A choral group from Grenfell performed several selections and many of the entertainers were children playing various musical instruments.

Sacred Heart Church is in the centre of the historic Lebret community which sits on the north shore of Mission Lake so named because of the Oblate Fathers mission and residence that once sat on the south shore opposite the village. The village and lake are part of a string of towns, villages and lakes in the Qu’Appelle Valley. The church faces the north wall of the valley which contains Stations of the Cross topped by a small chapel near the top of the hill.

The deanery contains 23 parishes and 11 First Nations communities. A banner representing First Nations was displayed in the church but the First Nations communities decided to hold their own centennial celebration at a later date.
