Reverend Norm Marcotte Celebrates 50th

May 24, 2009

It was standing room only May 24 at Holy Cross Parish as people came from near and far to celebrate Reverend Norm Marcotte’s 50th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood.

Parish Council President Bill Genert made a special presentation to Father Marcotte following the regular 10 am Sunday mass. “He is very special and well loved here,” said Genert following the presentation. Marcotte plans a trip to Medugorje, Bosnia-Herzegovina later this year and the presentation included parishioner’s contributions toward the trip.

Parishioners and visitors lined up at a reception in the Gerein Centre following mass to congratulate Father Marcotte and to wish him many more years. Marcotte said the anniversary was a great occasion for him and he very much appreciated all the well wishes.

Marcotte was born in Torquay, Saskatchewan, where he received his elementary and high school education. He attended St. Peter’s College in Muenster, Saskatchewan for a year then entered St. Joseph’s seminary in Edmonton for most of his priestly education then to Regina Cleri, a former seminary in Regina run by the Franciscans, for his last year before his May 24, 1959 ordination.

“I am happy to be here with the people and to praise and thank God,” said Marcotte in an interview. “I am so appreciative that God has blessed me all these 50 years with good people in every parish that I’ve been. It is the people that have given meaning to my priesthood.”

Marcotte said the first time he told anyone he was considering being a priest was in high school. A missionary had come to the school and was holding Reconciliation. “He asked me if I had thought about what I wanted to do with my life and I told him I had thought about a lot of things. He asked me to name one and I responded ‘the priest.’ It was the first time I had said that out loud.” He said his answer surprised himself. “I don’t know why I said that.”

He served for various lengths of time in six locations including Regina where he has spent the last 11 years. “Everywhere I went I thanked God for the people.”

Marcotte ended the day with a private dinner for invited guests and friends.
