May 2, 2009 Three symbols of the Regina Archdiocesan Centennial celebrations were released by the Centennial Central Committee at its April 22 meeting. One Hundred Faith Stories, a book of stories from around the Archdiocese, Our Lady of the Rosary Icon and the Centennial Logo were all given the green light for distribution to the public. Saskatoon artist Giselle Bauche created the icon which will travel the Archdiocese throughout the centennial year. “Special liturgical suggestions have been developed and offered for use in parishes when the icon visits,” said Marian Grady Pastoral Assistant at Holy Child Parish who developed the special liturgy on behalf of the Centennial Committee. “It draws you into prayer while looking at it.” Each deanery will have the icon for one month for travel to individual parishes within the deanery. The predominant colours of the icon are shades of red and gold. Our Lady of the Rosary’s robe is a medium to dark red; a halo surrounding her head is gold leaf and she is holding a rosary against her body in her left hand. Her head is tilted to her left shoulder, she has a concerned expression and her eyes are brown which would be typical of a Mediterranean Jewish woman. The background is gold filigree. It will be placed on permanent display in Holy Rosary Cathedral when the Centennial celebration ends June 6, 2010. The Regina Archdiocesan Catholic Women’s League sponsored the icon and donated it to the Archdiocese. One Hundred Faith Stories is a collection of reminiscences of parish life and the faith of the people written in the first person. Several tell stories of faith renewed, God’s intervention in escape from tyranny to a new home in Saskatchewan and of remarkable people who over the years helped build the faith community of the Regina Archdiocese. Vivian Bosch of Holy Redeemer Parish, Swift Current collected the stories and saw to their printing. “I did very little editing,” she said, “I wanted the stories in the words of the people.” Writers were cautioned to keep the stories to one page and the first 100 to arrive made it in the book. “I did not select the stories. It would not have been fair. So the first 100 to arrive were used.” Bosch said she received about 150 contributions. The Centennial Logo is already appearing on letterheads and other documents. Its predominant colours are blue and gold. The circle background is blue overlaid with a gold cross, three stalks of wheat and a stylized white dove. The cross represents faith, the dove is symbolic of the Holy Spirit moving forward and of course the wheat stalks and blue sky represent Saskatchewan. “The logo was created by Hellingman Inc of Hamilton, Ontario where we had some contact,” said Archdiocesan Director of Pastoral Care Sister Anastasia Young sss. “It will be used on letter heads, documents and on some merchandizing material,” she said. The Regina Diocese was initially formed as a suffragan See under the Archdiocese of St. Boniface on March 4 1910. The Centennial Celebrations will officially begin with a special service on Pentecost Sunday, May 31, 2009 and ended June 6, 2010 with an Archdiocesan gathering and mass at the Brandt Centre.
