Archdiocesan Centennial Celebrations Begin

May 31, 2009

Holy Rosary Cathedral was festooned with streamers and bows tied to the pews to celebrate both Pentecost the Church’s birthday, and the beginning of a year of Centennial celebrations for the Regina Archdiocese.

Originally established in March 1910 as a Suffragan See under St. Boniface, Manitoba it now encompasses most of southern Saskatchewan south of a line running approximately from the Great Sand Hills in the south west to the Porcupine Hills in the north east. There are approximately 120,000 Roman Catholics in about 160 parishes in the archdiocese.

The opening celebration at the Cathedral featured three special events; the reading of the Centennial Proclamation which was also read in all Archdiocesan parishes, the blessing and readings from the new lectionary and the blessing of the Our Lady of the Rosary Icon which will travel the archdiocese throughout the centennial year for special celebrations in each deanery and parish.

Archbishop Daniel Bohan focused on the Holy Spirit in his homily describing the Spirit as the life of God. “In the Bible the meaning of the word spirit is breath and breath of course is synonymous with life for we often speak of a person’s life breath. The Spirit is the Life of God!” The Archbishop said of all the religions that try and connect us to God only Jesus taught that God’s love is so strong that he actually shares his own life with us “We breathe with the life breath of God.” He also spoke of the pioneers who came from many lands with different cultures and different languages who came together and felt at home because of the Church.

“As we begin a new century of living our faith, the presence of God’s Spirit within us gives us great hope and confidence.” Archbishop Bohan ended his homily with the message of Jesus to go out into the world with a message of peace, hope and power for good. “When God sends forth the Spirit, the face of the earth is renewed. This becomes our project for the next 100 years.”

A free hot dog and hamburger barbecue was held behind the church following the mass.

The year-long centennial celebrations end with a huge gathering of the Archdiocesan faithful for a culminating mass in the Brandt Centre, June 6 2010. The centre can hold upwards of 6,000 people.
