Archdiocesan Awards Of Merit

February 2, 2010

Archdiocesan Awards of Merit were presented to 30 people at a special Liturgy of the Hours ceremony at Holy Rosary Cathedral. The Awards of Merit were created to celebrate the Archdiocesan Centennial and will become an ongoing recognition of people who have given long and faithful service to the Archdiocese.

Recipients from 3 deaneries received the award: 17 from Regina East including Frank Laurens of Holy Cross parish who was awarded posthumously; 11 from the Regina West Deanery including 3 posthumously, Norman Bridger of Regina Beach, Leslie Kumio Miki and Joe Moran. Moran died the morning of the award ceremony. 5 recipients were from the Qu’Appelle Deanery. Recipients included 8 priests, 1 Sister and 21 lay people. One of the priests, Reverend Adam Sebastian ofm, resides at. St. Michael’s Retreat house in Lumsden is 91 and Reverend Theodore Roy who resides in Quinton will be 90 later this year. Sebastian takes part in services at St. Michael’s and Roy helps out in the seniors’ residence.

The awards were presented by Archbishop Daniel Bohan who described the generous service of time and talent provided by the recipients is “a very good example of the spirit of true Stewardship. These people have shared the gifts that God has given to them for the benefit of all of us who make up the Body of Christ, the Church.” The Archbishop said by recognizing the recipients the Church also recognizes the many who generously give of themselves as well as the people who have gone before and through their efforts has brought the Archdiocese through its first 100 years.

Archbishop Bohan also explained the importance of the Liturgy of the Hours as the prayer of the whole church. It is also referred to as Vespers or Evening Prayer. “It is special because it is not simply our own prayer, it is the prayer of the whole Church.” Because it is the prayer of the church it is the prayer of Christ, he said, and we pray with Christ offering hymns and praise to His Father. “Our prayers, joined to those of Jesus, the Son of God, take on special meaning and power.”

Regina East Deanery recipients are: Reverend Len Albers, Patricia Anderson, Inez Benesh, Sister Cecile Campeau rndm, Theresa Davis, Betty Draper, Rose Everle, Phyllis Kennedy, June Grogan Maria Lebioda, Shirley Leibel, Roger Poissant, Robert J.
