The Holy Oils Anointing with oil is an important part of the sacramental life of the Church. The consecration of
Sacred Chrism and the blessing of the Oil of the Sick and the Oil of Catechumens by the local bishop at
the Chrism Mass is a powerful symbol of our oneness as a diocesan family through the ministry of our chief shepherd. The oils that each parish receives at the Chrism Mass become part of the parish’s celebration of sacraments for the coming year. The oils are to be formally presented to the parish at the Celebration of the Lord’s Supper liturgy on Holy Thursday evening. The format for this is included. As the oils are such an important part of parish life through their use at Baptisms, Confirmation and Anointing of the Sick, it is important to display them throughout the year in vessels that reflect their significance. It should be easy to pour the oil from these vessels as well. The ambry where the oils are displayed should be located in a place of honour. Ideally this would be part of the church’s baptismal area, but other areas include the Blessed Sacrament chapel or the sanctuary. Mission Statement of the Liturgy Commission To facilitate the implementation of the Vatican II documents concerning liturgy for the individual, parish and diocese. Liturgy is the common public action of worship in ritual, symbol and sign, scripture, sacrament, music, song, art, dance -- meaningful for the gathered faith community. Liturgy encourages the participation of all and leads to involvement of Gospel values in our daily lives. Eucharistic liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed and is the fount/source from which all the Church's power flows. Goals: (under the direction of the Archbishop)
