Lent is the SPRINGTIME in the Church’s year of grace. It is no coincidence that Easter comes with spring. The energies of Easter and of spring are one and the same. Life springs forth and persists in the very midst of death. After months of winter darkness our restless spirits long for light. We who experience the seasons so vividly on the Prairies know how spring particularly brings to us new life, warmth and energy - a new creation. Lent is a time to cultivate the spiritual soil of our beings and, through our Lenten practices, produce a rich harvest of fruits that will nourish and sustain our faith life. To enter into the spirit of these holy days it is important to take time to prepare to celebrate the feast of life. The Easter reality is so magnificent that the Church celebrates it and unravels its meaning for fifty days until the feast of Pentecost. For fourty days, then, we journey through Lent together, a movement that implies destination. It is a quest and has even a hint of the unknown. We journey into the desert of our own hearts and in solidarity with others. We have a plan for the journey traced by one who went before us and who calls us to follow him on this path: the paschal journey of Jesus Christ. Let us pray for courage for each other to follow this path faithfully so that together we can celebrate the wonder of the Easter mystery. Sister Anastasia Young SSS Director of Pastoral Services |
