Cuernavaca Project 2010 - 2011 Application Information

Please carefully consider the information below before submitting an application.

1. All applications are considered from students who are in grade 10 and up during 2010-11 and all interested adults.

2. The interview process consists of a brief individual interview and a group interview that will be scheduled for all applicants to attend.

3. The project is a social justice initiative. Monthly meetings will be held to learn more about:

a. Catholic Social Justice teaching and action.

b. International Development, including the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace, gender and development, environmental issues, etc.

c. Cross cultural sensitivities – how to approach the home and country of another, issues of racism, looking at our own mindsets, etc. Spanish lessons are part of the project.

d. Community building – how to work and travel closely together, how to fund-raise for a community goal; and introduction to base Christian communities; conflict resolution, self-esteem, etc.

4. The monthly meetings will be held one evening of every month, from 6 pm until 9 pm in Regina. The tentative schedule is as follows:
  • September – weekend seminar
  • October, November, and December – monthly meetings
  • January, February, March, April – monthly meetings
  • May – weekend seminar
  • June – Get ready to go!
We will be covering topics mentioned above. Participants may be involved in some community activities. Out-of-town participants will be offered billets in Regina, if requested. Everyone is expected to attend for the entire evening.

Parents or spouses are welcome to attend the meetings!

5. Only two explained absences are allowed from the evening meetings. Please inform Cathy Moen (586-0149) giving the reason for your anticipated absence at least the day before the meeting. If you have a job, please book off these meetings and times – weekends and evening meetings.

6. Two mandatory weekend seminars will be held in or near Regina. The weekend seminars will begin at 6 pm Friday evening and finish by 2 pm on Sunday afternoon. Groups will be formed to plan and bring food for meals. The first weekend seminar will be in September 2010 in place of the monthly meeting. The second weekend seminar will most likely be in May, 2011 (Schedule will be finalized with the group when formed.)

7. Fundraising is a major part of this project. All participants are expected to support each of these activities. Each family is expected to plan a major fundraising activity/activities that will bring at least $1,500 to the project.

8. All participants are required to participate in the letter-writing campaign requesting support and/or prayers from family, friends, and other acquaintances. All persons giving a donation will receive a tax-deductible receipt. Please make cheques payable to the Archdiocese of Regina with a note for the Cuernavaca Project.

9. Fundraising is done so all persons can participate and no one is left behind. Because the charitable dollars are being stretched to their limit with many groups needing support, students will be able to pay up to 50% of the required amount and adults will be able to pay out the entire amount. This amount is yet to be determined.

10. The project fosters community building through fun times, hard work, prayer, reflection and liturgies, friendship and fund-raising.

11. The travel time is yet to be confirmed but most likely will be 13 to 16 days beginning right after school finishes in June 2011.

12. Our experience is that the hot climate of Mexico and the greatly increased amount of walking and climbing we do can impact on a person’s well-being. If you have a chronic condition, please carefully consider how you would handle the increased physical exertion.

Applications are due no later than midnight April 18, 2010
