Archbishop Halpin
Charles Aimé Halpin,
was born on August 30, 1930 in St. Eustache, Manitoba. After
completing his high school at the Oblate Juniorate in St. Boniface, he
pursued his theological studies at St. Boniface Seminary, an affiliate of
the University of Montreal.
He was ordained to the priesthood on May 27, 1956 at St. Eustache.
In 1958, he was sent to Rome for post-graduate studies in Canon Law,
receiving his Licentiate Degree from the Pontifical Gregorian University
in 1960.
Then followed years of service at the Archdiocesan Chancery and
Matrimonial Tribunal. He was active in the Canadian Canon Law
Society.
On November 26, 1973, he was ordained to the episcopate, to become the
fifth Archbishop of Regina and the first 'born and bred' Western Canadian
to be named its Archbishop. His installation followed on December
12, 1973.
It was Archbishop Halpin's task to consolidate the renewal begun under
Archbishop O'Neill. His special concerns were social justice and lay
ministry formation. The many pastoral services provided by the
Archdiocese are his lasting legacy.
Archbishop Halpin died after a brief illness, deeply mourned, on April 16, 1994.
